What is an advocate?

Alzheimer advocates play an important role in improving the quality of care and quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families by working to improve dementia care and services; improve access to community-based care; improve quality care in residential settings; and expand funding for research and public programs serving people with dementia.

As an advocate, you will:

  • Receive regular updates about current legislative and public policy issues.
  • Stay on top of policy and legislative issues through alerts and updates.
  • Make calls or write to legislators to forward public policy priorities to improve quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s.

Pennsylvania advocacy

  • 2007-2008 Legislative Priorities of the Pennsylvania Public Policy Coalition - Our newly revised platform document outlines the main issues for which we are advocating in the PA General Assembly.

  • Assisted Living News - Click the link to read about the Coalition's close involvement in the legislative process that brought the Assisted Living bill to the Governor's desk on July 25, 2007. This legislation was long overdue; advocates had been fighting for nearly a decade on the issues, and the discussion will continue as regulations are currently being drafted. The Alzheimer's Association is representing Assisted Living consumers with AD/dementia at the table, and are therefore actively involved in the process of writing the regulations. Please contact michelle.seitzer@alz.org for more information.
  • Family Caregiver Support Bill - Follow this link to check the status of the Family Caregiver Support bill (House Bill 1830, Prime Sponsor: Rep. Phyllis Mundy, D-Luzerne), which seeks to increase monthly reimbursement amounts to caregivers. Caregivers who are eligible for this program have not seen an increase in reimbursement since the program's inception in 1990.

  • Family Caregiver Support Bill: Our Statement of Support - We were asked by members of the House Aging & Older Adult Services Committee to craft a statement of support to be delivered on the House floor regarding the Family Caregiver Support bill. Click the link to read our statement.

  • 2007 Legislative "Day on the Hill" in Harrisburg - Over 50 advocates participated in this year's main advocacy event at the State Capitol. Click the link to read a report of the day's activities.
